The Völuspá hin skamma section of Hyndluljóð says that Loki produced "the wolf" with Angrboða, produced Sleipnir with Svaðilfari, and thirdly "one monster that was thought the most baleful, who was descended from Býleistr's brother. In Sigrdrífumál, the valkyrie Sigrdrífa tells the hero Sigurðr that runes should be cut "on Sleipnir's teeth and on the sledge's strap-bands." In Baldrs draumar, after the Æsir convene about the god Baldr's bad dreams, Odin places a saddle on Sleipnir and the two ride to the location of Hel. In Grímnismál, Grimnir (Odin in disguise and not yet having revealed his identity) tells the boy Agnar in verse that Sleipnir is the best of horses ("Odin is the best of the Æsir, Sleipnir of horses"). In the Poetic Edda, Sleipnir appears or is mentioned in the poems Grímnismál, Sigrdrífumál, Baldrs draumar, and Hyndluljóð. The Prose Edda contains extended information regarding the circumstances of Sleipnir's birth, including that he is gray in color. In both sources, Sleipnir is Odin's steed, is the child of Loki and Svaðilfari, is described as the best of all horses, and is sometimes ridden to the location of Hel. Sleipnir is attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson.

The toffee notes hang on into the aftertaste for a very pleasing finish indeed. In Norse mythology, Sleipnir (Old Norse "slippy") is an eight-legged horse. There is a small amount of heat from the alcohol in the finish only. The first sip is a bold taste of liquid treacle toffee with a substantial mouth feel approaching that of a single cream (or at least whole milk). TasteĬlearly, treacle toffee is a perfect flavour if you are looking to hide the alcohol in a drink. There is little in terms of an overpowering alcohol scent at all. The aroma is almost exactly that of treacle toffee.

At 17% ABV, the legs are quite noticeable if you swirl the glass around. It is dark with honey colours only highlighting the meniscus of the liquid. The colour is what you’d expect from something containing treacle. In this case, however, the ingredients seem to be a mix of raw honey and treacle, so I suppose this is still technically a mead. When maple syrup is fermented alone, it is known asĪcerglyn. Such was the speed that Sleipnir could travel that Odin, the All-father, took him as his war horse.Ī lot of homebrewers like to use maple syrup, molasses or treacle instead of honey. The result was Sleipnir, an eight legged horse. Loki was a shape-shifter and appeared as a stallion and bred with a mare. Cleverly disguising it's 17% abv, it deposits a delicious and delectable hint of treacle toffee on the palate, that leaves you wanting more! Tasting like treacle toffee, this is a sweet, dark mead against the savoury of Loki.
